A. Goals and Basic Requirements of the Training Program
a. Goals
The program aims at cultivating high-level, application-oriented, multi-disciplinary, and specialized talents who have acquired knowledge and skills of Library and Information Studies, are able to address actual problems arising in the field of library and information by using managerial, economic, legal, and computational knowhow, are professional and competent for library and information field, and are able to meet the demand of national economy, social informatization and cultural development.
b. Basic Requirements
1. Students awarded with the specialized master degree of Library and Information Studies should have good mastery of Marxism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory; uphold the basic political line, guidelines, and policies of CPC; be patriotic, abide by disciplines and laws, have good professional ethics and entrepreneurial spirit, and be active in serving economic and social development in our country.
2. Students awarded with the specialized master degree of Library and Information Studies should have good mastery of basic theoretic knowledge and comprehensive professional knowhow in library and information field; be able to address actual problems arising in the field of library and information by using professional knowhow of information management; have creative thinking and the ability to work independently or take up managerial work in the field of library and information.
3. Students should be able to provide library and information services with advanced tools such as computation and the Internet and meet the demand of social informatization as well as national economic development.
4. Students should master one foreign language: be able to use one certain foreign language in information search and translation, namely, searching skillfully for information in this field in one certain foreign language.
B. Prospective Students
Students with bachelor degree (or equivalent) in the national education system.
C. Training Approach and Period of Schooling
1. The training approach includes courses, outreach, and thesis. With emphasis on basic theories, practical application, and frontier knowledge, the curricular arrangements highlight specialized and outreach curriculum.
2. A double-supervisors system for thesis mentoring: master supervisors with rich practical experiences in library and information field as well as experts from library and information institutions will be responsible for thesis mentoring.
3. Outreach bases are established in library and information institutions that have good academic conditions and rich experiences in outreach programs.
4. The cultivation approach combines theoretical study and outreach programs. Under the framework specified by the cultivation program, the curriculums and academic contents should try to integrate the requirements from library and information institutions. Thesis topics should be originated directly from key research topics in library and information institutions or information management field. The graduate students can thus have good mastery of basic theories and comprehensive knowhow, mastery of systematic research methodology, analytical abilities and creative problem-solving abilities. The pedagogies emphasize group study, case analysis, on-site research, and simulation training etc.
5. Period of schooling for the full-time specialized master program is normally 2 years and no more than 4 years.
D. Curriculum and Credit Requirements
1. Curriculum
There are degree and non-degree courses. Degree courses include Political Theories (Dialectics of Nature and Scientific Socialism) and core courses.
2. Credits
Graduate students should have no less than 35 credits in order to get the master degree of Library and Information Studies.
Credits of degree courses: no less than 19 credits. Political Theories: 3 credits; Foreign Language Course: 3 credits; Core Courses: no less than 13 credits.
Non-degree courses (optional courses): no less than 10 credits.
Outreach of Library and Information Studies (compulsory courses): 6 credits.
